3 Things You’re Probably Forgetting to Pack

When it comes to packing, it can be really easy to forget things. Here are 3 Things You’re Probably Forgetting to pack:

3 Things You're Probably Forgetting to Pack

And isn’t that a big fear that most of us have before we depart? Just as you’re boarding the airplane or reaching your destination you suddenly remember that one {probably not that important but it seems really important at the time} item you forgot to pack.

Then comes the frustration and annoyance of having to either live with it for the duration of your trip or having to fork up the money for something that you already own but unfortunately left behind.

I’m with you! I’ve totally been there, and will likely continue to be. So I’ve created a little cheat sheet for us to use before we head out the door. Here are 3 items that you most likely forgot to pack:

3 Things You're Probably Forgetting to Pack

You probably saw this one coming. Yep, I’ve done it too. How can something so crucial in today’s world be so easy to forget?? Honestly, I have no clue. We’re all practically glued to our phones.

I think the reason why I personally forget to pack it is because I always plan to wait until the last-minute to pack it because I need it to charge my phone the night before. If you do this, here’s a tip that I’ve found can really help: keep your phone on the charger until you’re ready to walk out the door. You’ll probably quickly realize that you don’t have your phone, so you will scurry around looking for it. When you remember that it’s on the charger and go to get it, you’ll have a visual reminder that you need to pack your charger. Option number 2: buy a second, travel only charger

Traveling overseas? Keep in mind that other countries typically have different power outlet designs! Next time you’re packing for a European getaway, do not forget your European outlet adaptor! Otherwise that phone charger is useless!

3 Things You're Probably Forgetting to Pack

Okay this probably depends on the type of trip and/or your mode of transportation. If you’re flying internationally, then you absolutely can’t forget your passport. I’m hoping that you’re aware of this because you already planned this big international trip. But you may have forgotten to bring it if:

  • you were in a hurry packing, laid it on the table, and just didn’t grab it
  • you decided to fly internationally spontaneously and didn’t think about it
  • you didn’t even know that you needed one (boy what an unfortunate surprise that would be!)

As far as drivers license go, it can be easy to forget them if you change your wallet or you aren’t planning on driving. But you still should bring it with you! It’s important for verifying your identity to pick up your rentals, proving you’re over 21 (if staying in the U.S.), identifying you in case of an emergency or accident, and so much more. You need it. Don’t forget it.

My tip here is to plan ahead and add these onto your packing list! Get your wallet fully ready to go and stash it (in your purse or backpack) until you leave. I always keep my wallet and passport in a special pocket in my backpack so I always know where they are!

3 Things You're Probably Forgetting to Pack

How many times have you gone somewhere and left your toothbrush behind? Way too many to count, right? It’s easy to forget things that we store in odd places like bathroom drawers, cabinets, showers, or toothbrush holders.

Here are some common things you might forget:

  • toothbrush/toothpaste
  • deodorant
  • soap/body wash
  • shampoo/conditioner
  • contact solution and case
  • hairbrush/comb
  • hair products or styling tools
  • shaving cream/razor

An easy solution for this is to create a toiletry bag and keep it handy at all times. Lucky for you, I already wrote a post all about how to do this and what to put inside! You’re welcome 🙂

This isn’t a comprehensive list by any means, so always double-check to make sure you have enough underwear, socks, etc. and that you bring a raincoat or umbrella just in case it rains!

August – Goals and Travel Plans

Can you believe that it’s already August?? It’s crazy how fast this summer has flown by!

August - Goals and Travel Plans

I’ve had such an incredible summer, and I hope you have too! My grad school start date is quickly approaching but before the craziness hits I wanted to update you all on my goals and travel plans for this month!

Let’s start with a recap:

Here were my June Goals. Let’s see how I did!

  • Instagram followers up to 500 looks like I need a new goal! 🙂  I passed this one pretty quickly! I’m currently up to 649 followers with much improved engagement!
  • Pinterest followers up to 400 above and beyond! Currently at 824!
  • Facebook likes up to 100  currently at 183!
  • Twitter followers up to 2,000 (currently 1,878) Surprised by this one because I really haven’t been paying much attention to my Twitter lately! 2,015

Social media went really well for me! I think a huge part in my Pinterest success was finally committing to an (amazing! Truly! Not just saying that) scheduler, Board Booster. (I highly recommend it.) My Iceland trip has really helped my Instagram! Those are the two I’ve been focusing the most on!

Here was my General Goals:

  • Post more frequently and consistently! (aka write posts ahead of time!! Gotta get better at this!) Yes for July because of the Kindness Challenge, but also no because I really slacked on the travel side of it!
  • Grow my newsletter subscriber list as well as open rate/click-throughs  There was improvement!
  • Network! Make friends with other bloggers! It’s already been so fun and rewarding, but I can still count it as a goal, right? 🙂 Definitely been building some great relationships!
  • Update design aspects of my blog (like the drop down menu) Nooo 🙁
  • Incorporate more giveaways! (Get excited, I already have 2 in the works!) and collaborations! (been to Asia? I’d love to feature you, just let me know 🙂 Still waiting on getting these worked out!

Overall, not too shabby! I definitely have some areas I want to improve on, but what blogger doesn’t? I’m excited for this upcoming semester, and hoping that my blog won’t suffer too much with everything I’ll have going on!

Goals for August:

  • Pinterest followers up to 1,000 and improve my average daily impressions/viewers, especially for A&K pins!
  • Instagram followers up to 800 and likes + comments consistently at the 200 mark!
  • Facebook to improve reach and post a couple of times a week!
  • Twitter to improve engagement and post at least 2x a day!
  • Update the design aspects of my blog
  • Utilize a new editorial calendar and scheduling all my posts a few weeks ahead of time!!

Think these goals are doable? I hope so! I’m not going to try to expect too much since this will be a very busy month! 🙂

Travel Plans:

Rewind. Iceland. It was amazing. Incredible. Out-of-this-world kind of nature/landscapes/beauty. I had a blast, and would love for you to follow me on Instagram so you can keep up my with my pictures from the trip! I’m also considering starting a YouTube channel if I ever find the time to edit all my video footage! What do you think?

Now back to Alaska. I’m so excited to mark off my dad’s 50th state and hike my little heart out among glaciers, mountains, bears, and so much more! 🙂 🙂 I will update you all the best I can (especially via Instagram) and look forward to writing tons of posts about both Iceland and Alaska!

That’s all I’ve got for now but I can’t wait to unveil my next trip in just a few short weeks! I’ll give you a hint: it’s to a national park!

What do you have planned for the August? Got goals or travel plans? I’d love to hear about them below!

Liebster AwardThe best part about receiving a nomination for the Liebster award is that now I can nominate three amazing bloggers! I highly encourage you to check out their site and follow them on social media!

Congratulations to the following individuals! Know that I believe in you and am excited for your future in the blogging world! Your Q&A questions are below!

Of course my first nominee had to be my beautiful and talented blogger friend! Grace’s lifestyle blog has everything magical and fun! She has a great eye for design and pretty things, and I promise that following her is a decision you won’t regret!

Bohotraveller started in January (same time as me) and man they are already extremely impressive! I was blown away with their site and how much fabulous information it contains! (I mean they even have an e-book, check it out!) They’ve got some great destination guides, travel tips, and resources. They are your perfect one-stop-shop for all your wanderlust needs!

Okay so technically Snorkels to Snow hasn’t launched yet, but I wanted to give them this award because I think they have a lot of potential and I’m excited for what’s in store! They already have a great presence on social media and I love that they’re taking their time to make everything perfect. Give them a follow on Twitter to keep up with them so you don’t miss a thing!

Liebster Award

Liebster Award

Liebster Award

I’m so honored and thankful to have received my (actually second) nomination for the Liebster award! It is commonly given to new bloggers from other nominees or more established bloggers. I was nominated by Kelsey, the lovely blogger over at Hipstorical. Thank you for the nomination Kelsey! Here are the kind words that she said about me-

“On her blog Adventures and Kindness, Emily writes about travel and self-improvement, empowering readers to seek adventures and create the fullest life. I absolutely LOVE Emily’s focus on kindness. I have a charm that hangs from my rear view mirror that says “kindness matters” as a daily reminder to choose each day to be kind. Way to go Emily!”

Isn’t she sweet? Go check out her blog for incredible travel advice on a wide variety of destinations!

And now to answer Kelsey’s questions! 🙂

My Answers

  1. When did you start your travel blog and why?

I started Adventures and Kindness in January! I had been thinking about it since the summer, but I didn’t think I could do it! I learned about the blogging world via Pinterest and it seemed a perfect way utilize my love for writing and passion for travel/self-improvement! My good friend Grace started a blog (I nominated her) and it gave me that last push that I needed to do it myself!

2. How did your childhood, hometown, or upbringing affected or inspired your travel?

My incredible parents played a huge role in my wanderlust! They claim travel as their favorite hobby, and my childhood was filled with fun adventures and opportunities to see the world. I’m so thankful for them and the opportunities that they still generously give me today!

3. I find one of the biggest challenges with being affected by wanderlust is being away from my family. Is this something you struggle with? If so, how do you cope and/or find the balance between traveling to new places and traveling home?

The best solution? Take them with you! I love traveling with my family and I often take them (and my boyfriend/friends) along with me! I think travel is so much more enjoyable when you get to share it with the people who you love!

4. How do you afford travel? What’s one of your tips for saving money for travel?

Most of my opportunities have been gifts from my parents (they are seriously the best) but travel is the reason I got into the freelance writing world! I wanted to be able to afford more trips and have since worked super hard and I’m hoping to one day monetize Adventures and Kindness to further my travel! My big tip is to try not to be a tourist. You’ll save money-saving at a rental place, eating at local restaurants/cooking, and exploring attractions that the locals enjoy!

5. I really love authentic travel experiences where you get to meet the locals and  immerse yourself deeply in the culture of the region you’re visiting. What’s your favorite memory of a really authentic interaction with a local?

Oh my goodness there’s too many to count! When you really get to know the locals, you’re in for the greatest treat. They will show you things and help you in ways that you didn’t even know to realize! I think I got to know the local’s the best in Haiti. I can remember an interaction with a Haitian man at his house where we talked about his beliefs, struggles, and everything in between. Genuine conversation is what it is all about!

6. What’s next on your bucket list?

My next trip is Alaska which I am super pumped about because it’s been on the bucket list for sure! I’d really like to hit the northeast part of Europe as well as Australia and South America!

7. What’s your best travel advice for other travelers?

Put down your phone. Soak up every moment and let your senses take it all in. Definitely take pictures (it helps you remember everything and makes for the best souvenirs) but don’t be afraid to ignore emails/work and just enjoy.

8. What blog are you most proud of?

Adventures and Kindness 🙂

9. If you could have a slumber party or poker party with 3 people, living or dead, who would you choose?

Definitely Emma Watson. She’s my all-time favorite. Then probably J.K. Rowling and Maggie Smith. (Slightly obsessed with Harry Potter if you couldn’t tell)
